Benefits of Sun Salutations

For those who practice yoga regularly, Sun Salutation, Surya Namaskar, is a very important part of practice. Sun Salutation is a series of poses preformed in a single and graceful flow that builds strength and increases flexibility. This series of poses do have variations but the flow does present basic core steps and moves involved in yoga.

Sun Salutation provides great physical benefits. In about 10 minutes you can experience a great low impact workout – combing some resistance and cardio training! It becomes a great way to burn fat and build muscle mass. It can be considered to be like interval training as Sun Salutation combines low impact resistance training (i.e. push-ups) with some cardio.

Regular practice of Sun Salutation provides you with other physical benefits such as:

  • strengthening and toning your muscles
  • draining your lymphatic system to eliminate toxins through movements
  • increasing spine and waist flexibility
  • toning internal abdominal organs which helps with better digestion

All it takes is 10 minutes a day to practice Sun Salutation and begin to feel the difference in your body. Take the time to rest and relax at the end and allow your body to take in what you just did. For those who do practice yoga regularly, try to do at least one or two rounds of Sun Salutation. Check out Yoga Basics for a great example of what is included in Sun Salutation. Go ahead and feel the difference!

Letting Go

Often letting go can be one of lifes many challenges. Being able to let go, whether it be of a person, event, idea, circumstance or misunderstanding, it is a trait that no one can teach you and yet everyone should learn how to do. Many people get caught up in life and forget that it may only take a couple steps of action to clear your mind and soul. Some circumstances take much longer to let go of but with some help, you may start to notice a change in your life. Take for example that friend. Everyone has the friend that some highschool boyfriend stole from you or the boss that is constantly on your back that you just cant let go of. They are always on your mind and come back to haunt you as you lay awake in bed…. Don’t worry. It’s normal. Most people have trouble letting go of many different things in their life. Here are a few different steps to help you try and let go and live life to the fullest, without worrying all the time. The world will keep spinning if you dont get that project done at work or if you dont get married to the perfect guy before age 30. Let’s take a look at ways to ‘let go’ together.

According to Lori Deschene, we as people “create and maintain problems because they give us a sense of identity.” Valid argument. I suppose that makes sense when you think about it – its just putting it into that perspective that seems difficult. She recommends some rather fascinating but awkward solutions to not being able to let go. First off, cry. That’s right – scream it out. Learn a new hobby or skill is also bound to take your mind off the situation. Use meditation and physical activity to increase endorphins. Let go of anger, simultaneously make a list of everyone wonderful you have ever done; Add to your list every day! Let yourself rant about the issue for a certain amount of time and then dont discuss it again. Sign up for a group activity or go to the spa.

There are many ways to try and let go of whatever it is that is lingering over your future. Try to make a change, stay positive and embrace life. You only get one chance to live life, so let go of any of the negativity and issues that bring down your spirit. Smile.

Grilled Lamb Chops

What better way to enjoy the beginning of spring by pulling out the barbeque! This time of year is my favorite when it comes to cooking because there is so much you can grill! Lamb chops was on the menu last night for dinner and they turned out delicious! Here is the recipe I used:

4 lamb chops

1/4 cup of fresh parsley, minced

1 tsp dried thyme & rosemary (use 1 tbsp each if using fresh)

3 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil

salt & pepper to taste

Mix all ingredients together and marinate the lamb chops. I left them in the fridge for about 2 hours before putting them on the barbeque. Grill the lamb on low-medium heat for about 16-20 minutes. When lamb chops get to 160F, they are done and ready to be be served!

Enjoy!

Zumba – What’s All The Buzz About?

Zumba is a mix of dance and fitness aerobics combined into 1 class. It mixes current and latin music and gets inspiration from belly dancing, salsa, merangue and hip hop. It was first publicly noted in 2001 (zumba.com) and has become a wolrdwide phenomenon ever since. For those of you who have not experienced a zumba class yet- do it!

Zumba is a full body workout. Usually the classes are a full hour packed with constant movement. (Don’t forget the water breaks!!). Most local gyms offer this fitness class or you  can check www.zumba.com for a location near you. If you are not comfortable going to a gym or fitness center, there are plenty of DVD’s you can purchase so you can work out at home.

Zumba is a fun new way to work out. Usually the hour has gone by before you know it. Bring a friend or encourage a colleague to go with you. Working out has never been more exciting.
